New Year’s Resolutions That Will Benefit Your Oral Health



With New Years just around the corner, many people start thinking of possible resolutions. Here are a couple Dental Resolutions that will benefit you greatly.


-Brush Your Teeth for 2 Minutes, Twice a Day

Many people get the number of times right but they don’t brush long enough. Two minutes is the recommended amount of time to remove the bacteria that builds up


–Floss Once a Day

It is important to floss your teeth once a day.  It removes the plaque between your teeth and from under your gums, where brushing cannot reach.


-Stop Using Your Teeth as Tools

Your teeth are not meant to trim your nails or open bags.  Your teeth aren’t meant to cut things other than food.



Just stop it. Smoking increases your risk of cavities, gum disease, gum recession and cancer.


–Replace Your Toothbrush Every 3 Months

If your toothbrush bristles look frayed or smashed, they are not properly cleaning your teeth and it’s time for a new one.


-Go to the Dentist at Least Twice a Year

It is important to get your teeth checked and cleaned regularly.  Regular checkups can help prevent small problems from turning into large, painful problems.


–Cut Down On The Sugar

According to the American Dental Association, “When you eat sugary foods or sip sugary drinks for long periods of time, plaque bacteria use that sugar to produce acids that attack your enamel”.  Try limiting your sugar and if you have a sweet tooth, try sugar-free candies or chewing sugar-free gum.


Incorporating just one of these resolutions will benefit your oral health.

Your Tongue is Important


Remember your tongue while brushing your teeth.


Your tongue is an important part of your mouth and you should include brushing it during your daily hygiene routine.

The bacteria that collects on your tongue can contribute to decay and gum disease.  An unclean tongue can also cause bad breath and affect your sense of taste.



If you don’t like brushing your tongue

You could try using a tongue scraper.

Just remember to be gentle with whatever form of cleaning your tongue you choose. You don’t want to hurt it.


Did you know?

-People with tongue rings are more at risk for infections because the mouth is filled with bacteria AND it can chip teeth.

-Nearly half of the bacteria in your mouth are found on your tongue.


Cleaning your tongue will greatly improve your oral health.

Grinding and Clenching Your Teeth


Do you often wake up with a headache or jaw pain?

If so, you may unknowingly be grinding or clenching your teeth.

Most people who grind and clench, do so while they are sleeping and have no control over it. Grinding and clenching, known as Bruxism, can loosen or wear down teeth and could lead to a possible crown, root canal or implant.


What Causes Bruxism?
There are many factors that could lead to Bruxism. According to the American Dental Association “Stressful situations, problems sleeping, an abnormal bite and crooked or missing teeth” can contribute to this problem.
